Why Choose Blackhall’s EPD for Cryogenic Protection?

Cryogenic storage environments demand uncompromising safety and reliability. The EPD valve by Blackhall is trusted globally for its precise shut-off performance under extreme cold and pressure conditions. Built to operate with liquid oxygen and other industrial gases, it integrates seamlessly with burst disc systems to provide full emergency venting control.

Fail-Safe Design

Automatically closes on excess pressure, preventing tank rupture and system failure without manual intervention.

Oxygen-Compatible Materials

All materials are degreased and BAM-approved for use in LOX systems, ensuring chemical integrity and safety.

Precision Engineered

Accurate closure point calibration with repeatability, short lead times, and custom end connections for easy installation.

How the EPD Works

The EPD is a pneumatically actuated globe valve linked to a pilot pressure controller and a calibrated rupture disc. Under normal operating conditions, system pressure remains below the disc’s burst rating. When the pressure exceeds the preset burst point, the disc ruptures—this action depressurises the pilot line, activating the actuator cylinder and closing the valve immediately. The system isolates downstream components, preventing dangerous overpressure conditions in tanks and pipework.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an Excess Pressure Device?

An Excess Pressure Device (EPD) is an automated valve system that shuts off flow to protect cryogenic storage tanks or pipework when pressure exceeds safe operating limits. It’s a critical part of emergency venting and isolation systems.

Is the EPD approved for LOX service?

Yes. The EPD is constructed from BAM-certified materials and degreased for compatibility with liquid oxygen (LOX). It is TÜV approved and conforms to industry safety standards.

What’s the max burst disc range?

The EPD supports burst disc ratings from 3.5 bar.g to 40 bar.g, providing broad flexibility across cryogenic system specifications.

Can I install it on existing VIE lines?

Yes, the EPD is supplied with optional end connections and can be adapted for retrofit installation into existing VIE (Vacuum Insulated Evaporator) lines. Custom mounting configurations are available.
